પ્રિય હેમેન્દ્ર,

જાણ લખવાનું કે ઘણું આશ્ચર્ય વચ્ચે ગઈ કાલે તારો પત્ર પ્ર. કાકાએ મને આપ્યો. પ્રથમ નજરે તો માની પણ ન શકાયું કે એ પત્ર તારો હશે, આટલી ઝડપથી હજારો માઈલ દૂર બેઠેલ મિત્રને મળી શકાતું હશે એનો ખ્યાલ પ્રથમવાર જ આવ્યો. અત્યારે જ પ્ર. કાકા સાથે કાન્હા અને બીજા એક મિત્ર સાથે અમેરિકન ફિલ્મ "Picnic in Pyjama" નામનું Picture જોઈને આવ્યો છું. અને તે ફિલ્મમાં ત્યાંના Picnic નું અને બીજા પ્રસંગોનું વાતાવરણ જોતાં જ નરત તારો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો અને મારે અસુસોયમાં ચુસ્કી મારવા જવું પડયું કે આખું બાપુ હવે ક્યારે જોવા મળશે? તે ઉપરાંત રવિવારના Paper માં પણ વિમાનની New York લંડનની Return Ticket By Air ના ભાવો જ નજરે પડેલા અને તેથી ચોક્કસ લાગ્યો ભલે ૨૫૦૦ કે ૩૫૦૦ રૂા. માં તો અમેરિકા જઈને પાછા પણ આવી શકાય!! અત્યારે તો બધા વિચારો માટે આયોજન જ શોધવું પડે . . . અને કરીશું તો ખબર જ છે!!

મુંબઈથી અમરશી અને ત્યાંથી રાજકોટ-બરોડા-વલ્લભનગર વગેરે સ્થળ સગાંઓ કે જે ભારતથી અહીં વર્ષોથી દૂર રહેલ ને તારા અમેરિકાના સમાચાર અગાઉ ધમાલમાં ૨-૧૦ દિવસ સાથે રહેલા પણ તારા જવાના ઉત્સાહ અને તૈયારીમાં આપણો સંતોષી વાતચીત કરવાનો ટાઈમ મેળવી શકેલ નહિ. અને હવે સ્વાશ્રયે છીએ કે આ વખતે આપણને પૂરતો સમય મળશે. કો કે મને તો આશા માં ઘણો રસ જ દેખાય છે કારણ કે આ વખતે પાછો તું સ્વદેશ પાછા ફરવાના શબ્દ ઉત્સાહમાં કોશિશ એટલે જે જે વાતો થયેલાના વિચારો કર્યા હશે તે સર્વે પ્રસંગો બનાવવા નરત લંબાઈ જ જવાના!! તેનું એક જ અને Solution બને છે કે જ્યારે મને કોઈ પણ વિષય આપણે થયેલા માટે યાદ આવે કે તરત નાની નોંધ કરી લેજે New York થી લંડન સુધીની મુસાફરીમાં કદાચ ઘણાં વિષયો યાદ આવશે તો Pocket Diary માં તરત નોંધ કરી રાખજે. હવે ટૂંક સમય તને કે તારા તરફથી ઉત્તર મળવો જોઈએ અને ચોક્કસ તારીખો તથા Program નક્કી થઈ ગયો હશે, અને ૩૧ તારીખની જીંદગીની છેલ્લી પરીક્ષા પણ સારી રીતે પસાર થઈ ગઈ હશે, અને હવે કોઈ પણ જાત ના ભાર વગર તું સાવ હળવો અને આઝાદ બની ગયો હોઈશ થોડી ઘણી ગાડીવાળો ગણાયો અને ગાડી ફેરવીને ઉડાવે સગવડ $ 10 ની ટુંકી ટચ પાઈને વેચી પણ દીધી. ખરેખર માળું હું તો મેં ખૂબ મજા કરી હશે.

લંડન મા મીટીંગ કરવાના રસ્તામાં Amsterdam તથા Brussels ગોઠવે તો વધુ અનુકૂળ પડે. પણ Brussel પ્રદર્શન ગોઠવે તો ભારે પડે પણ નવું જોવા અને તે વખતે તું સાથે હોય તો આપણ બંનેને ઠીક પડે ખરૂં કારણકે ગોઠવવું તે સમજ પડતી નથી તારા અમેરિકાથી લંડનનો સાયન્સ Plan નક્કી થઈ જાય પછી બરાબર ખબર . . .

કેમેરા અને Tape Recorder ના સારા મળશે અને ઘણા ધરાકો આપણે ત્યાંથી પણ મળી, Tape Recorders ૭૦ D.M થી ૧૦૦૦ DM સુધીના Variat on માં મળી શકશે. Hi-Fi Players બનાંગ ૧૦૦૦ DM ની આસપાસ મળશે. Recorders પર લગભગ ૧૬% ની . . .

luck too !!! Electrical Appli. ૨૩૦ V પર જ કામ કરતાં હોય છે. તે ઉપરાંત ગરાન્ટના એક પ્રશ્ન પર મેં તપાસ કરી પણ ખાસ પ્રેમ પાળે નથી જર્મન currency ખૂબ જ Hard છે, અને મેળવવી મુશ્કેલ છે. પરમીટ સીવાય તો મળે નહિ. પ્ર. કાકા પાસે Excess હતી પણ unfortunately ગરમ દિવસે ૩૧/૩ ના દિવસે Expire થાય છે નવી પરમીટ માટે અરજી કરવી અને ટાઈમસર મળી શકશે તો તને ૧૦૦૦ D.M સુધી આપી શકશો એમ કહેતાં હતાં તે ઉપરાંત બીજો એક મિત્ર આવતા મહિનાના End માં Excess પરમીટ છે કે નહિ તેનો ઉત્તર આપવા કહે છે ત્રીજો માસ ૨૦ - ૩૦ % on લઈને ૧૦૦૦ DM જેટલા આપવા તૈયાર છે તો આવા સંજોગોમાં મને કુલ કેટલા Marks જોઈએ છે તે જણાવજે એટલે હું પણ Spare કરી શકું તેમ છે કે નહિ તેનો વિચાર કરી શકું. મારા માટે Souvenier તરીકે લાવવા માટે તને સામે પણ ગઈ કાલનો પત્ર વાચ્યા બાદ હું નહિ લખે તો પણ ચાલશે, કારણ કે તારે પ્રવાસની પણ ભાગાભાગી હશે તેમાં હું તને મૂંઝવવા માંગતો નથી.

Custom ના Rules વિષે ચોક્કસ કહેવું ખૂબ મુશ્કેલ છે. કારણ કે

 

એમ હું માનું છું. તે ઉપરાંત Hand loom નો માલ પણ સારા પ્રમાણમાં ઉપડે. India માંથી Export માટે. તો કોઈ જાતના Restriction કે લાઈસન્સ વગેરેની જરૂર પડતી નથી પણ Import કઈ રીતે થઈ શકે તે પૂછી જોજે અને બધું અનુકૂળ હશે તો તું India જઈને Export side સંભાળજે અને હું આ તરફ Import સાઈડ નો બંદોબસ્ત કરીશ. ખાસ આ વિષય પર થોડી માહિતી જરૂર મેળવજે. તું ત્યાં કુશળ હશે. હું અહીં કુશળ છું. પત્ર મળ્યેથી ત્વરાથી લખજે.

ત્યાં લગભગ બધું જ સરકારી અને રશિયાથી કામકાજ હોય છે. નીકળી જાય તો મોટા મોટા બૂથ પણ પસાર થઈ જાય અને કોઈ વાંધો ન કાઢે અને ક્યારેક નાનકડો ચોક પણ પૂરો Tax લઈ માને!! તેમ છતાં મેં થોડી તપાસ કરી તો જાણવા મળ્યું કે પ્રાયઃ ૧૦૦૦ Rs. ની Luxury-articles Free of Tax લઈ જવા દે છે તે ઉપરની સામે પણ પૂરો ટેક્સ લે છે. Luxury-articles માં electrical-goods - Cameras - Perfumes - Pans વગેરેનો સમાવેશ થતો હશે.

તે કાકા બર્લિનમાં છે અને તને યાદ કરે છે હું અહીંથી મોડા અને પરમ દિવસે અગર ૨/૪ ના દિવસે ડેરીલ્ડ જઈશ, હાલ તો મારી પાસે Telephone No. નથી પણ પહેલી બે બાદ Telephone No. આવશે

લંડનથી મહેન્દ્ર પણ આ તરફ આવવા નીકળે છે. હવે અહીં સમયથી લખ્યા કરે છે પણ ચોક્કસ તારીખ લખતો નથી તેથી ક્યારેય કોઈ ખબર પડતી નથી કે ક્યારે આવશે

લંડન માં જે માણસને ત્યાં ઉતરે તો તેમની સાથે - થોડી Export - Import વિષે બાબતો મેળવી લેજે. ખાસ કરીને આ તરફના દેશોમાં આપણા દેશનો ક્યા પ્રકારનો સામાન સારા પ્રમાણમાં...

Dear Hemendra,

This is to let you know that, to my immense surprise, Respected Kaka handed over your letter to me yesterday. At first glance, it was unbelievable that the letter could be yours; for the first time, I realized that a friend sitting thousands of miles away could be reached so quickly. Just now, along with Respected Kaka, Kanha, and another friend, I returned after watching an American movie titled "Picnic in Pyjama". Looking at the atmosphere of the picnic and other occasions there in that film, I immediately thought of you and had to go take a sip of espresso, wondering when we will finally get to see "Akkhu Bapu" (the whole picture). Apart from that, in Sunday's paper, the prices of New York to London return air tickets caught my eye, making it seem certain that even for Rs. 2500 or 3500, one could go to America and return!! Right now, for all these thoughts, one has to look for planning . . . and once we do, we will know!!

From Mumbai to Amarshi, and from there to Rajkot-Baroda-Vallabh Vidyanagar etc., relatives who have been away from India for years stayed together for 2–10 days in the previous hustle and bustle; but in the excitement and preparations of your leaving, we couldn't get satisfactory time to talk. And now we rely on the hope that this time we will get enough time. However, I see a lot of interest in this hope because this time, in the enthusiasm of your returning to the homeland, whatever conversations and plans were thought of will surely be extended to turn into events!! There is only one solution for it: whenever any topic comes to mind regarding what happened between us, make a small note immediately. During the journey from New York to London, perhaps many topics will come to mind, so quickly note them down in a pocket diary. Now, in a short time, a reply should be received by you or from you, and the exact dates and program must have been fixed; and on the 31st, the last exam of life must have passed well, and now without any kind of burden, you must have become completely light and free. Considered somewhat with a car, and driving the car around to enjoy, selling it for a short $10 deal—really, my friend, you must have enjoyed a lot.

If you arrange Amsterdam and Brussels on the way to meet in London, it would be more convenient. But if Brussels arranges an exhibition, it might be heavy, but to see something new, and if you are together at that time, it would be fine for both of us because how to arrange it is not clear. Once your science plan from America to London is finalized, we will know properly . . .

Good ones for camera and tape recorder will be available, and many customers can be found from our side too. Tape recorders will be available in variations from 70 D.M. to 1000 D.M. Hi-Fi players will be available around 1000 D.M. On recorders, nearly 16% of . . .

Luck too !!! Electrical appliances work only on 230 V. Besides that, I inquired about a grant question, but there is no special progress. German currency is very hard and difficult to obtain; it cannot be obtained without a permit. Respected Kaka had excess, but unfortunately, on the hot day of 31/3, it expires. He was saying that if an application for a new permit is made and received on time, he could give you up to 1000 D.M. Besides that, another friend says he will answer by the end of next month whether there is an excess permit or not; a third person is ready to give up to 1000 D.M. taking a 20–30% charge. So in such circumstances, let me know how many total marks I need so I can consider whether I can spare any or not. As for bringing a souvenir for me, even if you don't write after reading yesterday's letter, it will be fine, because you will be in the rush of travel, and I don't want to confuse you.

It is very difficult to say anything definitive about customs rules because—

I believe so. Apart from that, handloom goods also move in good quantities for export from India. No kind of restriction or license etc. is needed, but inquire how import can be done; and if everything is favorable, you handle the export side after going to India, and I will make arrangements for the import side on this end. Do gather some information specifically on this subject. Hope you are well there; I am well here. Write quickly upon receiving the letter.

There, almost everything is handled by the government and Russia. If it clears, even big booths pass through without anyone raising an objection, and sometimes even a small check post charges full tax and insists!! Nevertheless, I did a little inquiry and found that generally, luxury articles worth Rs. 1000 are allowed tax-free; above that, full tax is charged on the remainder. Luxury articles probably include electrical goods, cameras, perfumes, pens, etc.

Respected Kaka is in Berlin and remembers you. I will leave from here later today, tomorrow, or on 2/4 for Krefeld. Currently, I don't have a telephone number, but after the first two, a telephone number will be available.

Mahendra is also set to leave from London towards this side. Now he keeps writing from time to time, but does not state an exact date, so it is never known when he will arrive.

At the house of the person where you stay in London, gather a few details regarding export-import with them—especially what type of goods from our country move in good quantities towards these parts.
