Dear Hemendra,

I received your letter dated September 16th and 17th on the 26th, and at that time, reading your letter made me so happy with you that I felt an immediate desire to reply. But unfortunately, this letter remained lying in the post office at that time. Your letter turned out to be much longer and more detailed than expected, so it is only natural that I would be happy, isn't that true? But what about the fact that I spent a month and a quarter in replying?! To be honest, you are the only friend of mine residing abroad to whom I have delayed replying to a letter so much. To others, as far as possible, I reply on the exact same day or without fail on the next day. I wished to maintain the same practice with you too, but under the name of deep friendship, taking liberty and considering you family, I delayed it a bit. On the 26th, I had specifically purchased these papers from Zaveri Bazar, but a reply couldn't be given immediately.

It feels to me that letters have an intoxicating effect just like liquor. Because as soon as I receive a letter, if I sit down to reply in that very intoxication, there is no issue; but if a day or two pass by, that intoxication fades away completely and laziness takes its place. Almost every night I wished to write you a letter, but due to the entire day's exhaustion, I would feel a bit sluggish and fall asleep right away. However, today I made a firm resolve, and so this work remaining from that long time is being completed! I have candidly told you the real reason behind giving such a late reply, so if you feel annoyed with me, as soon as you read this letter, take cold water from the refrigerator, pour it over your head, and cool your mind! Though I believe this letter itself will work better than cold water. And if your intellect inclines you to do 'Tit for Tat', explain to it that Naresh delayed replying to the letter only considering you as personal and family—what is greater than a letter? I remember you almost four to five times every day. In particular, I keep worrying more about my application.

Thoughts about it keep coming to my mind all day long—what must you have done about that application? Perhaps by mistake or knowingly, you haven't set it aside, right?! Another thing—I brought back your Bush Shirt from the Band Box 15 days ago in an undone state. Seeing its delicate condition, they felt sympathy, so they kept it in that very condition; and don't worry, the money was paid, as they refunded me Rs. 1 (one). So now inform me what arrangement I should make for these clothes and money. Reading your travel description really makes me envious! Learned about your experiences in London and New York. Mehta too had written similar experiences of London in his first letter as yours. Everyone is very Reserve minded and Orthodox. Ah, but you haven't mentioned at all whether you fell victim to the heavy rain that came before boarding the plane or not? What was offered on the plane? And which items did you decline, etc.—if you write in more detail, it would be great; thank you very much.

I was delighted to learn that your place of stay is located in an extremely scenic environment; but now going forward, whatever Progress you make, do share it without fail. Or are you going to turn secretive like Kaka? Every day upon waking up, you must be seeing Sorority models in beautiful attire. What is a Campus over there? How many have you made friendship with so far? If there is anything Extra-Ordinary, do inform about it. There, the concept of Boy and Girl doesn't seem to be treated as restrictive. People can talk to each other freely and openly to their heart's content. Did you give those models information about India, and while doing so, you surely didn't forget to mention about me, right?! How many unique characters are there in your class? How much fun was there in the International week-end celebration? Describe that in detail too. Do you now regret not learning Dance before leaving? If there is any regret or lingering disappointment about things or tasks left incomplete here before leaving, do let me know so that a way out can be found.

Your letter made it more definite that most Indians who go from here build relations with Americans and bring the friendship between the two countries closer! You too should do something like this, though on this matter there is no need for me to advise you! There is nothing particularly new from Kaka. It seems progress is increasing day by day. He is doing well. Met Rasik Kothari, Rajnibhai, Mahmad, etc. I had also gone and delivered the news of your arrival to Rajendra, but the deceitful ones were completely forgotten—I will definitely convey the news to them tomorrow afternoon. Ramnikbhai from Ghatkopar met me at the station one day while returning from Rajkot. He had gone to Rajkot for an interview somewhere, and he was saying that he would most likely have to shift there.

Both of your notes are safe with me, so do not worry about them. In person, I sometimes try to understand what is written, but it proves difficult. I haven't written the letter to Philadelphia as you suggested; if I feel like it, perhaps I will write. Awaiting the reply to the letter... From now on, I will keep giving you regular replies to your letters; it is not understood why there was a delay at this very beginning. Though you too are lazy like me in giving replies, make an improvement in that now. And make a sincere effort from your heart to maintain regular correspondence. If there is any work here, do let me know. My respected mother, respected father, and respected uncle remember you sometimes. When I met Prakashbhai, he got angry with me without cause... Write in detail about everything new over there. If you find Blue Prints for any good item worth making, do send them. I had mentioned it to you in person, but remembering it again now, I am reminding you. Please inform me about what your monthly expense comes to, because ever since you were here you used to save Dollars, so now as an American don't do it in Rupees.
