વાગ્યા પહેલાં તારો છેલ્લો પત્ર
ઘડિયા થઈને અને આવ્યો.
હમણાં ખોજવાંડુ થયાં ઘડિયાનું ઘર
બંધ કરીને અમે સૌ આવ્યા
છીએ. અહીંથી ચિ. સૌ. ચંપાને,
ભાઈ દિનેશને અને ચિ. બેન
પપુ ને તાવ શરદી
થઈ આવ્યા તે જ ઘર
બંધ કરીને સૌને આવવું પડ્યું.
હવે અઠવાડિયું થયાં બધાને સારું
થઈ ગયું છે. ચિ.
સૌ. ચંપાને, જાણે પપુને તો
ખોરાક આપવો શરૂ કરી
આપ્યો છે. દિનેશને બે
ત્રણ દિવસ પછી ખોરાકની
છૂટ આપશે. મતલબ કે તબિયતની
ચિંતા કરવા જેવું નથી.
પત્રના જવાબ ગૃહ તરફથી
સાંભળવા તેવા પણ આપણું
કિરણા છે. અને બધાની
તબિયત સારી છે. કોઈ
બાબતની ફિકર ચિંતા કરશો
નહીં. આપણી અઠવાડિયામાં ઘડિયા
જશું. તમારી તબિયત બરાબર સંભાળજો અને પત્ર નિયમિત
લખતા રહો. ભુલવું નહીં.
લખાણો ઈલીનોઈસના મહિમા વિશે સારું છે
બંને પારસલ. જે દિવસ પહેલાં
જ ગયા છે અને
સૌ પળ્યાં છે. ચારું સાહેબ
વરસાદ દેશની અંદર / સરરાસ કરતાં જમણથી પડી ગયો. જ્ઞાન
ઓરડા ટાઈફોઈડ ના ખાટલા હશે
ધણ્યા હતા. એય શાહદ્રાની
આઘો દેવા લાગ્યો છે.
ચિ. અનુભાઈ સૌ. વિમળા તથા
બાળક સત્તરયાં છે. મોટાભાઈ, ભાઈ
નાનું, છોટું ક્યારે પણ મળ્યા છે.
ઓફીસનું ફિનીશ અગાઉથી સોંપ્યાસ્વા ની રૂબરૂ ફિરસો.
થોડું મધુ ગણાયે પરંતુ
અંદર ઠીક છે. બીજું
ગઈતા ૨૭/૭ ને
શનિવારના રાતના ૧૦:૪૫ મિનિટે
કાંઈક કે જે મુંબઈ
સુધી ધરતીકંપના જે અમે સાથે
થયા સૌ રખવાળાં પરોઢિયે
૫ વાગ્યે. સાંસા લાગશે તેથી અસાર, કચ્છ,
સૌરાષ્ટ્ર, ગુજરાત, થોડો મુંબઈ રહ્યાંના
હરી ગામોગામ લાગ્યો પરંતુ બીજા કોઈ જગ્યાએ
ધારો મુકાની ન થઈ પરંતુ
કચ્છની અંદર ગાય તેમજ
બીજા ચૂંગા ગામમાં ભારે નુકસાન થયું
છે. થોડાંકનું નુકસાન થયું છે સેંકડો
માણસો મર્યા છે. હજારો મકાનો
જમીનદોસ્ત થઈ ગયા છે.
સગાસ્નેહી પંદર હજાર માણસો
ઘરબાર વગરના થઈ ગયા છે.
મતલબ કુદરતી કોપ થયો છે.
આ સમાચાર ત્યાં આગળ પત્ર લખવા
ન પામ્યા હોય. બીજું ફિરતોને
બજારોમાં ખુશી ખબરના પત્રો
આવ્યા છે. ચિ. સૌ.
પંજુ બહેનનો પણ અસમુખરાયે પરમ
દિવસે અને બધાની ખબર
પૂછવા આવ્યા ગયા. અસમુખરાયને એમના
માતા તરફથી જીજ્ઞાસાની રેલ્વેની સેવા પાસે રાંધી
(ખીલરયાં) માહિલાવધાઈ. બીજું અનુભાઈ ગયા. પત્ર વિગતોથી
પત્ર પાંડેથી બાપુજીનાં સુચિ...

તમને
ગયા પછી કાગળ આજ
લખી શકાય... આખું પત્ર ઓફીસથી
સીધો લખીને નાંખી દેવાશે. એટલે રંગ જશે.
ત્યાં તમારી તબિયત સારી હશે. આજે
અમારા સૌની તબિયત હશે
સારા છે. તમારા કાગળથી
ઘણું આપણું મળવાનું મળશે... આજે પૂ. બા-બાપુજીની તબિયત સારી છે.. મંજુબેન,
હસમુખભાઈ પણ પૂરી ફિકર
કે અહીં પત્ર તોડવા
આવેલા... સહુના પણ પૂરતી પેપરના
કાગળો આપે છે. પેલી
ચોપડી કંઈ ઉપયોગમાં આવે
છે કે કાંઈ? કદાચ
ટાઈમનો અભાવે પણ ન થઈ
શક્યા હોય. જરા નોંધ
લખશો. લી. ભાભીના સ્નેહ
સ્મરણ પપુ, ટોકી મજામાં
છે. તમને યાદ કરે

ભાઈ,
તમારા
છેલ્લા પત્રનો ઉત્તર ઘણો મોડો આપું
છું. ઘરમાં ત્રણ જણની ઓચિંતાની
બિમારીને અંગે તેમની સારવારમાં,
અને બાકીનો સમય ઓફિસ attend કરવામાં
જતો. ઓફિસમાં પણ કામ ઠીક
રહેતું રહે છે તેથી
સાંજે મોડી પડે બાકી
ને ઘેર લઈએ ત્યારે
લક્ષ્મીને બીજું કંઈ પણ કરવાને
બદલે પથારી ભેગાં થવાનું જ વધારે રહે
છે. હવે સૌ સારાં
થતાં જાય છે તેથી
આજે થોડો ઘણો સમય
મેળવી ને આ લખું
છું. પાછું થોડા દિવસોમાં બેંગલોર
ત્યાં જઈને ત્યાંથી જ
રહીશ. સપ્ટેમ્બરની આખરમાં course પૂરો થયા પછી,
એ સમયના સંજોગો જો અનુકૂળ હશે
તો સાથે સાથે વિઝીટ
પણ કોઈ સારી મળતા
આવવું છે. રસ્તાનો, સમય
મળવો મુશ્કેલ છે એટલે આ
વર્ષમાં ભાગ્યે જ ક્યાંય દેખાઉં
છું.
હમણાં
બે દિવસ વનલીલા, આવી
પડેલાં... અને દિવસ રામાયણમાં
આપણે ભાવનગરથી તમે મોડું ઘણું
બધું સાહિત્ય મળેલું છે. Sea mail થી મોકલેલું સાહિત્ય
ભાગ્યે જ દોઢ મહિને
ત્યાં મળતું હશે, તેથી તમે
ત્યાંથી જ્યારે ક્યાંય shift થવાના હો ને પહેલાં,
એટલા સમય પહેલાં ખબર
આપવા જેથી તમને મોકલેલ
વસ્તુઓ, તમારા ત્યાંથી નીકળી ગયા પછી ન
મળે. મિલાપ મળે છે ને
? વનલીલાબાઈ શાહપુરમાં, વડોદરા છે. મણીલાલભાઈ ની
બદલી અહીં થઈ છે
તેથી ઈન્દુબહેન પણ હમણાં અહીં
છે, તેથી એમનો લાભ
જ્યારે હવે મળતો રહેશે.
નલન
તરફથી ખુશી ખબર આવે
છે. તમને પણ પત્ર
મળતાં હશે. મંજુબહેન હમણાં
બે દિવસ અહીં આવેલાં
- હસમુખભાઈ training માં રાંચી આવતી
કાલે જાય છે. બે
મહિના રહેશે -
ઓફિસનું
Time Table મળતું રહે.
આ
વર્ષે વરસાદ સારો થયો છે.
જે વરસ સારું જશે
તો વધુ વણાવવાની પૂરી
શક્યતા છે. કચ્છના ધરતીકંપ
વિશે બાપુજીએ બધું લખ્યું છે.
જીવનમાં પહેલી વાર જ ધરતીકંપનો
અનુભવ થયો. રાત્રે ઊંઘમાં
સહુ બેઠા હતા ત્યાં
થયો. સૌ ગભરાઈને અગાસીમાં
ભાગ્યાં - ઠીક આંખ જાગી
ગઈ. પરંતુ સૌથી વધુ ખુવારી
કચ્છમાં કરી. લગભગ ૨૫૦
મર્યા - ૩૦૦ ઘાયલ અને
અપાર નુકશાન. અત્યારે રાત્રે છાપામાં Headlines માં સમાચારો આવે
છે. વળી નવીનમાં દેશમુખે
રાજીનામું આપ્યું - હવે જવાહરલાલ નાણાં
ખાતું પણ સંભાળશે ! ૩૩
દિવસના strenuous પ્રવાસ પછી દિલ્હી પહોંચ્યા
બાદ એક Flight માં એમણે અગત્યના
પ્રશ્નો કે જે એમની
વાર કોઈ બેઠા હતાં
(!) ને ઉકેલવા શરૂ કરી દીધા
છે.
વળી
ખાસ કંઈ નવીન નથી.
ત્યાંના નવીન લખાવતા રહેશો.
તમારું મોકલેલું સાહિત્ય હજી પૂરું ક્યાંય
સમય પણ મળ્યો નથી

Dear Brother Batuk,
Greetings. Your last letter arrived folding-wise before five o'clock. Recently, after trouble arose in Ghadia, we all came here locking up the house in Ghadia. From here, Dear Champaben, Brother Dinesh, and Dear Sister Papu caught fever and cold, so we had to lock up the house and all come over. Now after a week, everyone has recovered. Food has been started for Dear Champaben and Papu. Dinesh will be allowed food after two or three days. Meaning, there is no need to worry about health.
Listening to the reply to the letter from home is our wish. Everyone's health is good. Do not worry about anything. We will go to Ghadia in a week. Take proper care of your health and keep writing letters regularly. Do not forget. The write-up about the greatness of Illinois is good. Both parcels went a few days ago, and all have been received. Good rain fell in the country/region on average from the left side. Bedsteads for typhoid were set up in the room. Shahdra is also being given away.
Dear Anubhai, Respected Vimla, and the child are staying. Elder Brother, Brother Nanu, and Chhotu also met. Handing over office completion in person... slightly less, but inside it is fine.
Secondly, on the night of Saturday, 27/7, at 10:45 PM, an earthquake occurred, the tremors of which were felt up to Mumbai. Everyone woke up at 5 AM in the morning. Terrified, it felt across Anjar, Kutch, Saurashtra, Gujarat, and a few villages around Mumbai. However, no major damage occurred in other places, but in Kutch—in Anjar as well as other surrounding villages—heavy damage occurred. There was loss to life, hundreds of people died, thousands of houses were flattened to the ground, and fifteen thousand relatives and friends became homeless. Meaning, a natural calamity occurred. News of this might not have reached you via letter there.
Secondly, letters of good news arrived in the markets. Dear Respected Panjubahen's Hasmukhrai also came day before yesterday to inquire about everyone's well-being. Hasmukhrai received news from his mother regarding Railway service...

A letter could be written to you only today after you left... This whole letter will be written directly from the office and posted, so it will reach on time. Hope your health is good there. Today, all of our health is good. Your letter will bring us much joy upon meeting... Today, Respected Ba and Bapuji's health is good... Manjubahen and Hasmukhbhai also came here to open/read letters with full concern... delivering proper newspaper letters for everyone. Is that book coming in handy for anything or not? Perhaps due to lack of time, it couldn't be done. Please write a short note.

Dear Brother,
I am replying to your last letter very late. Due to sudden illness of three people at home, time went into taking care of them, and the remaining time went into attending office. Work in the office also remains quite heavy, so returning home late in the evening leaves us going straight to bed with Lakshmi instead of doing anything else. Now everyone is recovering, so getting some time today, I am writing this. In a few days, I will go to Bangalore and stay there. After completing the course at the end of September, if circumstances permit at that time, I wish to make a good visit alongside. Finding time on the road is difficult, so I will hardly be seen anywhere this year.
Recently, Vanlila visited for two days... and day in Ramayana, we received a lot of literature from Bhavnagar. Literature sent by sea mail hardly reaches there in a month and a half; therefore, before you shift anywhere from there, inform us that much time in advance so that items sent to you do not arrive after you have left that place. Are you receiving Milap? Vanlilabai is in Shahpur, Vadodara. Manilalbhai has been transferred here, so Indubahen is also here right now; thus, we will benefit from her presence now.
Good news comes from Nalan; you must also be receiving letters. Manjubahen came here for two days recently—Hasmukhbhai is going to Ranchi tomorrow for training and will stay for two months.
Keep sending the office timetable.
Rain has been good this year. If the year goes well, there is full possibility of increased yield. Bapuji wrote everything about the earthquake in Kutch. Experienced an earthquake for the first time in life. It happened at night while everyone was asleep. Everyone got scared and ran to the terrace—well, eyes opened up! But it caused the maximum destruction in Kutch. Almost 250 died, 300 injured, and immense loss occurred. Right now at night, news comes in headlines in newspapers. Also, in new developments, Deshmukh has resigned—now Jawaharlal will also handle the Finance portfolio! After a strenuous 33-day tour, upon reaching Delhi, he started resolving important issues in one flight that were waiting behind him (!).
Nothing else particularly new. Keep writing about news there. The literature sent by you hasn't been fully read yet due to lack of time...
