જડે
સાહેબ, હું માણસ છું
કે મશીન?? છે તો માણસ
જ એ મને ચોક્કસપણે
ખબર છે પણ હમણાં
હમણાં કાંઈ તારામાં ખૂબ
જ ફેરફાર પડી ગયો છે.
મને લાગે છે કે
તારે કોઈ મોટી મુંઝવણ
ભરેલ ચિંતા હશે? સાચો ને
કઈ ચિંતા છે? એવાઈ આના
પત્રથી અમને પત્ર તું
લખે અને તે પણ
સંપૂર્ણ નહિ એ તો
કેવી આશ્ચર્યની વાત!!! પત્ર પણ વર્ષો
બાદ લખે છે. હું
તો છેલ્લા ઘણા દિવસોથી તારા
વિચારો કરતો અને અંતે
મનમાં ધારો ભાઈ સાહેબ
ને ગરમી સહન થતી
નહિ હોય!!! અંદર તો બિમાર
પડી ગયો હશે અથવા
તો ભયંકર-મોટો કોઈ plan ના
વિચારમાં પડી ગયો હોઈશ
વગેરે અનેક જાતના વિચારો
આવતા હતા.
આજે
Exceptionally Good-Day છે.
ત્રણ જ ઘર આવ્યા
નાહ્યો અને જમીને તારો
પત્ર વાંચ્યો. સેન્ડ બેડી તરફથી તડકામાં
બેસવાની ભલામણ થયેલ પણ મેં
અડધા સાંભળી ને જાન-કાનમાંથી
કાઢી નાખેલ પણ તેમાંથી ન
છૂટકો પાછા Message આવ્યો કે મારે બગીચામાં
ખુલ્લા પૂલમાં બેસવું. એટલે તારો પત્ર
અને આ પત્ર લઈને
આઈ બગીચામાં પરાણે તપવા બેઠો છું.
આ "ગાંડા લોકો તો ગોરા
છે એટલે વાંધો નહિ
કે Brown થશે પણ Poor નરેશ
તો Brown છે તેમાંથી વધારે
Darker Shade પર જ જશે જેવું
હું સહેજ છાયામાં બેઠો
છું.
ગયા
શનિવારે ડુસેલડોર્ફમાં ચાંદી Party હતી ત્યારે કે
ખૂબ યાદ આવ્યો હું
થોડાક ફોટા લઈ ગયો
જો ને તારે મને
મોકલી આપવા જોઈએ યોગ્ય
મને લાગે છે. ગયા
શનિવારે પણ થાય શેરોવાણી
પાડવા ન જોઈએ કેવા
લાગે છે ત્યાંના નવીન
શું ફેરફાર જેવું લાગે છે? ખાસ
નહિ. નોકરી મળે કે તરત
જ મોડર્ન ડ્રેસ મોકલવાનું તૂલતો નહિ. Thanks in advance.
તારો
Portable Radio ત્યાં પહોંચીને બંધ થઈ ગયો
છે તે જાણીને દુઃખ
થયું જનતા રેડિયો સારો
Radio છે (જુનો) વાળો હોત માર્કેટમાં
આવ્યો નહિ હોય. ત્યાં
Repair થતો order માં જ હશે
કાંઈ Repair કરવા જેવું હશે
જ નહિ. સાચું જાત
Camera નું ખુલી ગયો હોત
તો ઘણું સરસ અને
હું પણ સંમત થયેલ
હોત તો Suggest કરત દિવસો ખૂબ
જ મોંઘે છે. તેટલી હું
આપી હોત ત્યાં ચો
સુંદર કેમેરા માટે પણ છે.
Wonderful Climet ત્યાં
મુંબઈ ક્યારે જવાનું થશે? સાયન્સ ઉતરવાનું
રાખજે.
તેઓને
પત્ર આગળથી લખી નાખજે. Technical Kid ત્યાં બધાને
ગમ્યો કે નહિ? કોઈ
બીજો Prospective ગણાય હોય તો
મને જણાવજે. Delivery Bombay માં આપીશ પોસ્ટકાર્ડ
સાઈઝ Enlargment ના અહીં કેટલા
નકદ નથી મળતા જેથી

એટલે મુંબઈમાં જનતા સંધી ૧૦-
મુંબઈમાં મોકલવાનું મને વધુ યોગ્ય
લાગે છે. કારણ કે
અહીં મોકલવાઓ રોતા કરતાં ઘડામણ

N.P લે છે જ્યારે મુંબઈમાં

છે. Indian સાડી Lady નો ફોટો મોકલવા
આપ સાહેબ ને સાહેબ ખૂબ
આપને મન્યો નથી (લાગતો!!!) ગયા
શનિવારે ડુસેલડોર્ફમાં બધાએ મન ભરી
વિષે પૂછીને મારો દમ કાઢી
નાખેલ. સાડીમાં કોઈ પણ એક
ફોટો તેને મળતો નથી????

— બાકીના દિવસો તો શાંતિ થી

ગાળતી હશે. માં પણ

14/7/58 — Suddenly came across this letter today. It remained to be posted this morning. Today they declined to give paper for Postcard size enlargement.

Jade Saheb, am I a human being or a machine?? I am definitely human, that I know for sure, but lately there has been a huge change in you. I feel like you must be facing some major perplexing worry? Tell the truth, what worry is there? Writing a letter to us with an 8-anna airmail stamp and that too incomplete—what a surprising thing!!! And that too writing a letter after years. For the last many days I was thinking about you, and ultimately thought in my mind, "Bhai Saheb must not be able to tolerate the heat!!!" Inside, either he has fallen ill, or he must have gotten lost in thoughts of some terribly huge plan, etc.—so many types of thoughts were coming to mind.
Today is an Exceptionally Good-Day. Delivered only three houses, took a bath, had food, and read your letter. A recommendation was made by Sendbedi to sit in the sun, but I half-heard and ignored it. However, a message came back out of necessity that I must sit in the garden near the open pool. So taking your letter and this letter, I am sitting in the garden forced to bask in the sun. These "crazy people are white so it doesn't matter if they turn Brown, but Poor Naresh is already Brown, so he will only go towards a darker shade," as I sit slightly in the shade.
Last Saturday at the party in Düsseldorf, you were remembered very much. I took a few photos, see which ones you think are suitable and send them to me. Even last Saturday, shouldn't photos in Sherwani be taken? How do they look? What new changes do you feel there? Nothing special. As soon as you get a job, don't forget to send a modern dress. Thanks in advance.
It is disappointing to know that your Portable Radio stopped working after reaching there. Janata Radio is a good Radio, if it were the (old) one, it might not have come to the market. Repairing it there must be on order; there might not be anything major to repair at all. True, if the Camera had opened up, it would have been very nice, and if I had agreed, I would have suggested it—days are very expensive. That much I would have given; there is scope for a beautiful camera there too. Wonderful Climate. When will you have to go to Mumbai? Make sure to stop at Sion.
Write a letter to them in advance. Did everyone like the Technical Kit there? If anyone else is considered prospective, do inform me. Delivery will be given in Bombay. Postcard size enlargements aren't available here for cheap—they charge 12 annas here, so sending to Janata Sandhi 10 in Mumbai seems more appropriate to me. Because sending it here will cost more in labor than in weeping! Here 2" x 2" Black & White prints cost 25–30 N.P., whereas in Mumbai it comes to 12 to 15 N.P. Sending a photo of an Indian lady in a Saree doesn't seem to appeal to you, Sir! Last Saturday in Düsseldorf, everyone exhausted me by asking to their heart's content about it. Not a single photo found of her in a saree???? Filmindia or Filmfare
Judge me based on the person, not on the writing—what kind of person I am. The rest of the days are passing by peacefully. Hemantbhai, when are you coming to Ahmedabad??? A lamp burns on its own and gives light, but a matchstick ignites others.

My address will remain the same for sending letters... 2–3 weeks ago I wrote a letter to an Ahmedabad address; has it been received? When will a reply come from that address? Didn't get one from our Subasidid either—perhaps she is spending her time very nicely. Mother is also fine.
