Dear Brother Hemendra,
I wrote a letter to you before this, and after that, sent a Rakshabandhan thread, but there is no mention of it from your side, so did you receive them or not? Bapuji gave news that you have restarted your job; how long have you joined there for? A short while ago, there was a letter with good news from Bharati; I had written asking her to come here to Pune.
Further, Bapuji had a letter two days ago stating that he is thinking of arranging your marriage after Diwali in November. And he has invited both of us sisters. But for my part, I would have to spend on a twelve-anna horse carriage, so why should we come unnecessarily incurring a twelve-hundred expenditure? Bapuji writes that you have told your father-in-law to hold the wedding with complete simplicity, but from the stacks of Bapuji's letters, it seems that since your father-in-law has only three daughters, he wants to perform it in a grand manner, which should be seen in the letters to Bapuji. By simplicity, do you mean not showing off to the world, or is it that your father-in-law shouldn't give anything to Bharati and they desire to hand over a bride to us just like that? Bapuji believes we should give you something in person, but without knowing your view, what can be written? Even so, you should not speak/interfere in what Bharati's father wishes to give her.
I too do not believe in spending money foolishly on weddings — such as taking out a groom's procession (Varghodo), wasting money on elaborate mandaps/decorations, hosting grand feasts for guests, or showing off to the world what was given or doing one-and-a-half times over. That should indeed be done keeping our country's situation in mind. But if the other person wishes to give whatever they want to their own daughter, and if Ba and Bapuji also happen to have a desire to give something to Bharati, you should clarify matters on that point. You won't be able to recognize the minds of women. Today, if Bharati gives us nothing, Bharati might not feel hurt right now, but after some time she will certainly feel that so much was given to the brother-in-law and now whatever comes will be given to others too, but nothing was given to me. And how much joy women get even from receiving a small thing from their parents' house — feeling that "this is something from my father's home which is entirely mine" — and they can show it to others with enthusiasm.
Take my own case: I didn't get even a one-val ring from my in-laws. Looking at it this way, one shouldn't feel hurt about it, but when friends wear theirs and go out, saying "this came from my in-laws," at that time one feels that we have nothing even worth talking about. It is not because we are poor... (words crossed out)
All this is written for you to consider; as for what you should or shouldn't do, only you can decide, right? But Bapuji had given three thousand to Elder Brother (even if spent now, Elder Brother mentioned to me that he would deposit that amount back under his name). Also, some jewelry and clothes were given to Younger Sister-in-law at a time when our financial condition wasn't even like this, and now they will also give to Hitesh's wife; then if only your wife receives nothing, even the world will taunt Ba and Bapuji. Even I and Bharati... aunt-like figures indirectly mention how much affection there is for you. Although Bharati, being so educated, would certainly think about the future and past, even so, if something happens that takes her thoughts into account while also respecting Ba and Bapuji's wishes a little, that would be good.
Do write a letter. Has your health improved at all? Lilaben is over there. If you happen to go that way sometime, do visit her; she will like it very much. All of us are fine here.
