પ્રિય ભાઈ હેમેન્દ્ર,
તું બેંગલોર આવ્યા
ના ખબર તને રાજકોટથી
ભાઈ નાનુ તરફથી મળ્યા
હશે. હું તથા હવેભાઈ
અત્રે તા. ૨૩/૨/૫૭ ના રોજ
આવેલ છીએ. મેં આંહિયા
Field Course પુરો કર્યો અને હવેભાઈએ Service Course. આજે રાતના
હું અહિંથી મદ્રાસ જઉં છું અને
ત્યાં બેકે દિવસ રોકાઈને
મુંબઈ થઈને રાજકોટ જઈશ.
હવેભાઈ અહિંથી સીધા મુંબઈ જાય
છે. આ પત્ર લખવાનું
પ્રયોજન તો તારો બહેન
દેવી ઉપરનો પત્ર ગઈકાલે વાંચ્યો
એટલે વ્યાજબી વિગતે જાણ આપવો જોઈએ
એટલે આપું છું. બાકીનો
હું કાગળ લખવામાં ઘણો
જ ઢીલો છું. બેંગલોર
આખું જોઈ લીધું. માયસોર
જવું હતું પરંતુ જઈ
શકાયો નહિ. બેંગલોર ગર્વનમેન્ટનું
નવું Secretariat જોઈ આવ્યા. ૩૧-૩૫ લાખનું પ્રાથમિક
બજેટ નકકી કરવામાં આવ્યું
હતું અને ખર્ચ રૂ.
૬૫૦) લાખ (અંદાજે બે
કરોડ) ખર્ચાઈ ગયા છે. મકાન
હજુ ઘણું અધૂરું છે.
કેબીનેટ
મીટીંગના હોલને સુખડના દરવાજા મુકવામાં આવ્યા છે અને તેની
ઉપર સુંદર કોતરણ કરવામાં આવી છે. વિધાન
સભામાં પણ સુખડનો સારા
પ્રમાણમાં ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવ્યા છે. હિંદ અત્યારે
ચૂંટણીઓથી ધમધમી રહ્યું છે. વિધાન સભામાં
હરેક જગ્યાએ કોંગ્રેસની સામે બીજા ઘણા
પક્ષો આ વખતે આવી
ગયા છે એટલે કે
આ વખતે પુરેપુરી મથામણ
થતી જાય છે. લોકશાહી
ખીલી ઉઠી છે. વડીલશ્રી
અને પૂ. બાપુજીનો ખુશાલીપત્રનો
પત્ર છે. દેશમાં સૌ
આનંદમાં છે. કલકત્તાથી પૂ.
બેન નો રાકેશ આવ્યાની
ખબર છે. તારી કુશળતા
ઇચ્છું છું. બાકીનો કોરો
ભાગ બહેન દેવીના સુંદર
અક્ષરો માટે રહેવા રાખું

જતુભાઈ પત્ર મળ્યો વાંચી
અત્યંત આનંદ થયો, ફરી
પણ લખશો એવી આશા
રાખું કે! અનુભાઈ ગઈકાલે
અહીંથી અમેથી ગયા છે મદ્રાસ
એકાદ બે દિવસ રોકાઈ,
બોમ્બે થઈ રાજકોટ જશે.
મારો પત્ર તમને શા
મારૂના બાદ મળ્યો તે
જણાયું, દુકાન ના નોકર ને
પત્ર પોસ્ટ કરવા આપેલ તેને
પૂછ્યું કું તું એ
પોસ્ટ ઓફિસમાં પૂછી પંદર સ્ટેમ્પ
લગાડજે, પણ તેને પૂછ્યા
વગર જ આનાની સ્ટેમ્પ
લગાડેલ.
તેણે
ઘેર આવી ને કહ્યું
ત્યારે આશા નહતી કે
આપ પહોંચશે પણ પહોંચ્યો ખરી.
તમારા પત્રની વિગત ભરી આનંદ
અને આભાર ત્યાંના લોકો
ઘણાં પ્રવૃત્તિમય છે તે જાણ્યું,
"ભૈયા" હિંદુસ્તાનમાં પણ ઘણી પ્રવૃત્તિ
છે, પણ જે કરે
તેને માટે, જેને આપણું જીવન
જ જીવવું હોય તેના માટે
કંઈ નથી સ્ત્રીઓ માટે
પણ ઘણાં ક્લાસો છે,
પણ આપણાં માં જાવાપાપાનું એટલું
બધું છે કે સ્ત્રીઓ
બાયરી રસોઈ માંથી બીજું
કંઈ પણ કરવાની ફૂરસદ
મેળવી શકતી નથી, ફૂરસદ
મેળવવી તે આપણાં હાથની
વાત છે, તેવી મારી
માન્યતા છે, પણ આપણો
સમાજ એટલો બધો પછાત
છે (તેમાં ખાસ ગુજરાતી) કે
આગળ વધી નહિ અને
વધવા દે નહિ. રાજકોટ
થી નાનુભાઈ નાં પત્ર આવી
છે, જગદીશ નો પરણગા, માર્ચ
૨૪ મી થી શરૂ
થશે, તેને આ મહિનાનું
વેકેશન પડશે ને મોસમાન
જ્યાં ઇચ્છા કરીશે મોસમાન થી રમિકભાઈ એકલા
દેશમાં ફરવા આવવાનાં છે.
તમારે ગળે ખરજવું થયું
હતું, તે ખબર છે,
પણ મટ્યું કે નહિ, તે
ખબર નથી, ન મટ્યું
હોય, તો ત્યાં કંઈક
ઉપચાર કરશો, મારી તબિયત સારી
છે, મજામાં છું. તમારી તબિયત
ની સંભાળ રાખશો. અત્રે સૌ કુશળ છે.
"ભૈયા" અમારા લગ્ન ની ચિંતા
હું કરતી નથી, ઘરમાં
વડીલો છે, તેથી મારે
ચિંતા કરવાની હોય જ નહીં.
હિંદુસ્તાનમાં ઘણાં "રત્ન" છે જરૂર એકાદ
આવશે, "રત્ન" મળી જશે. અડવા
ત્યારે ફૂરસદે પત્ર લખશો. Ta Ta લી.

Dear Brother Hemendra,
You must have received news of my coming to Bangalore from Brother Nanu in Rajkot. Myself and Havabhai arrived here on 23/2/57. I completed my Field Course here, and Havabhai completed his Service Course. Tonight I am going to Madras from here, and after staying there for a couple of days, I will go to Rajkot via Mumbai. Havabhai is going directly to Mumbai from here.
The purpose of writing this letter is that I read your letter to sister Devi yesterday, so I felt I should give you proper details, which I am providing. Otherwise, I am quite lazy when it comes to writing letters.
Saw the whole of Bangalore. Wanted to go to Mysore, but couldn't go. Went to see the Government's new Secretariat in Bangalore. An initial budget of Rs. 31–35 lakhs was fixed, and the expenditure has crossed Rs. 650 lakhs (approx. 2 crores). The building is still very incomplete.
Sandalwood doors have been installed for the Cabinet Meeting hall, and beautiful carvings have been done on them. Sandalwood has also been used generously in the Legislative Assembly.
India is currently buzzing with elections. In the Legislative Assembly, many other parties have come up against Congress everywhere this time, meaning a full-fledged struggle is going on this time. Democracy has blossomed.
There is a letter of well-wishes from Respected Elder and Respected Bapuji. Everyone in the country is in high spirits. News has been received from Calcutta that Respected Sister's Rakesh has arrived.

Dear Jatubhai [Batuk/Hemendra],
Received your letter, read it, and was extremely happy; hope you will write again! Anubhai left here yesterday for Madras, will stay for a day or two, and go to Rajkot via Bombay. Learned why you received my letter late: when I gave the letter to the shop servant to post, I asked him to inquire at the post office and put a 15-anna stamp, but without asking, he put an anna stamp.
When he came home and told me, I had no hope that it would reach you, but it did reach after all. Was filled with joy and gratitude reading the details in your letter; learned that the people over there are very industrious/active.
"Bhaiya," there is a lot of activity in India too, but only for those who want to do it; for those who just want to live an ordinary life, there is nothing. There are many classes for women as well, but in our society there is so much [burden/tradition] that women can hardly find any leisure time outside cooking in the kitchen. Finding leisure is in our own hands—that is my belief, but our society is so backward (especially Gujarati) that it doesn't move forward and won't let others move forward either.
A letter has arrived from Nanubhai in Rajkot; Jagdish's wedding/festivities will begin from March 24th. He will get this month's vacation, and if he wishes, Ramnikbhai alone is coming to travel in the country.
I knew that you had eczema on your neck, but don't know whether it cured or not. If it hasn't cured, do get some treatment over there. My health is good; I am fine. Take care of your health. Everyone here is safe and sound.
"Bhaiya," I don't worry about our marriage; there are elders in the house, so there's no reason for me to worry at all. There are many "jewels" in India, surely one "jewel" will turn up. Write a letter at leisure whenever you can. Ta Ta.
