[landlady...]

Dear Batukbhai,
Your letter written on the 12th arrived here yesterday from the court. Respected Bapuji went to Rajkot the day before yesterday morning, so he hasn't read your letter yet. Manubhai came from Bhavnagar the day before yesterday; Motabhai had called him over for some work in Rajkot yesterday, so he left. Nanabhai has gone to Jetpur again—he will return here in a few days. No letter has arrived from Calcutta yet.
There was a letter from Manjuben in Rajkot—Hasmukhbhai has been transferred to Jetpur, so they will move there on the 1st. Chandaben has been written to, inviting her here—it would be good if she arrives in Mumbai while you are there, though nothing is finalized yet. You too must write a letter there before leaving.
Your final oral exams must be over—by the time this letter reaches you, I assume you will have received your M.S. degree.
Dinesh's exams in Rajkot will be over soon, after which he will come here. Motabhai's letter mentioned that his papers went very well. Kuba and others will depart on Laxmi's steamer; someone from Rajkot will go up to Porbandar to see them off. Delighted to know that you will also be departing around the 10th. I estimate you will reach here around the 11th–12th of May [April/May]. Sukhlaalbhai is still in New York, and news has arrived that Veeravala has reached Mumbai.
Is Naresh studying in Germany? Until now, I was under the impression...
...that he was in Glasgow and Jagdish was in Germany. Both of them must still be staying there. Since Naresh is not in Mumbai this time, write to let us know where you plan to stay.
Mo. Bhabhi [Elder Sister-in-law] is going to Mumbai during this vacation. She was there when you left, and she will be there again when you arrive. You can go stay there whenever you wish—however, as you arrive now, Nanabhai or I can only sit here and merely dream of coming up to Mumbai. Perhaps Motabhai will also go to Mumbai, so those people will insist that you stay at Shamaldas's (Jharkia's house). But I wish and feel it would be much better if you do not stay there. I wish to write more, but I refrain—you know their behavior well anyway. Keep in mind that everyone will try to act nice when you arrive. Getting tricked or seduced by anyone's net of words is the greatest foolishness of this era.
For many months, I had been thinking of writing a different kind of letter to you, but I felt I should write it only after your studies were completed. Now that you are actually coming back, I am laying out all the facts so that you have time to ponder your future. Bapuji and Motabhai wish that you return and join our office—but Ba and I feel that it would be far better if you find a separate, independent field of work for yourself in the future. Because despite all these years passing, if you join the office amidst issues that haven't been resolved truthfully, remember that a new dilemma is bound to crop up.
Whatever deterioration has occurred in our household atmosphere to date has been solely due to Bapuji's excessive leniency towards Motabhai and Bhabhi, and it will continue to happen...
...because when things ought to have been spoken out, not a single word was uttered, and now it cannot be spoken at all. Because of this, Ba and everyone else have suffered greatly—especially Ba, who suffered the most and is still suffering. Bhanubhai's attitude has also turned strange; even that is incomprehensible.
There are so many of us in the house, yet whenever we go to Rajkot from here, it constantly feels as if the walls themselves are a heavy burden. Bhabhi, being the eldest, still does not realize her responsibilities. She will do a great deal for any outsider, but where her enthusiasm vanishes when it comes to doing something for someone within the family is beyond understanding. Bhanubhai also lacks practical understanding regarding family conduct. Just between family members, even after going all the way to Calcutta, he neither bought anything for Shailesh nor got him anything from there.
Currently, among so many sisters, Bhabhi is the only sister-in-law! Whatever these sisters do for us will never be forgotten. We owe them nothing, yet it feels as though we are indebted to them. Anubhai wishes to do a lot for Bhabhi, but currently, the authority is not in his hands.
Furthermore, regarding bringing items for the children from there, I suggest that you bring identical things for everyone so that no one has any reason for resentment. Do not make any distinction at all, and do not buy clothes, as such things can be obtained here anyway; otherwise, people will just leave them lying around. Also, do not bring anything for any of us, but do bring one good and useful item—other than clothes—for Dinesh alone, because he is the youngest brother, and the elder brothers don't pay much attention to him. If asked, Motabhai does not refuse to buy anything—he has plenty of that kind of generosity.
(Do not mention any of these matters in your reply letter.)
