પ્રિય ભાઈ હેમેન, તારા બંને પત્રો ફરતા ફરતા અહીં મળી ગયા છે. પત્ર લખવાનો વિચાર ઘણા જ સમયથી રહ્યાં કરીએ છીએ પણ હજુ સુધી તને પત્ર નથી લખી શક્યા તેનું દુઃખ થાય છે.

દૂર દૂર ગયેલા સ્વજનો ને પોતાના પ્રિયજનોના પત્રો કેટલો આનંદ આપે છે એ તો જેને અનુભવ હોય એજ સમજી શકે પણ બીજાના અનુભવોથી થોડીક કલ્પના જરૂર થઈ શકે. તને હવે ત્યાં બરાબર ફાવી ગયું હશે અને તબીયત પણ સારી રહેતી હશે. તારા મુસાફરીના તથા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યાના વર્ણનો વાંચીને એમ થયું કે જાણે પ્રત્યક્ષ જોતા હોય એમ લાગે. ક્યારેક ક્યારેક તે દેશના પ્રદેશો, વ્યક્તિઓ રીત રિવાજો વગેરે અમને લખજે. જોકે હવે તો દુનિયામાં સાયન્સ તથા વિજ્ઞાન કેટલું બધું આગળ વધતું જાય છે કે આપણે કોઈ ગામડાના ગારના નાનકડા ઘરમાં જીવન વિતાવતા હોઈએ ને છતાં દુનિયામાં દરપળે બનતા બનાવોથી વાકેફ રહેવા ધારીએ તો રહી શકીએ એવી સગવડતાઓ થઈ ગઈ છે અને બીજા થોડાંક વર્ષોમાં તો સાંભળ્યા રોજ સમાચારો તથા બનાવો જોઈ શકાશે, પછી ક્યાંય ન ગયાની કે ન જોયાની ખામી સંભાળે દરેક વ્યક્તિને છે એ નહીં રહે.

તમારું ઘર કેમ ચાલે છે? શ્રી હસમુખલાલ પણ ત્યાં આવવાની તૈયારી કરે છે, ત્યાં એટલે તમારા જ શહેરમાં કે બીજે ક્યાંય? ત્યાં આવશે ત્યારે સૌને સાથ સારો રહેશે.

તારો છેલ્લો પત્ર હજુ મળ્યો નથી. ફરતો ફરતો આજકાલમાં આવી પહોંચશે જોઈએ. તારા સ્વેટર વિષે જ્યોતીએ આગળના પત્રમાં લખેલ ને મુકાવવા બાબત પછી આજે એ બાબત પત્ર છે. તારો પત્ર મળે એટલે વિગતવાર

 

ખ્યાલ આવશે હમણાં દિવાળી સુધી સમય જરા ઓછો મળશે એટલે કદાચ હસમુખલાલ સાથે જ મોકલી શકું પણ તારે ખાસ જરૂર હોય તો તાત્કાલિક જણાવવાની કોશીષ કરું તો તરતજ જણાવજે.

વડીયાથી ખુશીખબર આવે છે. પૂ.બાપુજીને હજુ એમનેમ છે. ઘેર ઘેર પંખા ક્યારે થશે એ અનિશ્ચિત છે. બીજા બધાનું સારું છે એમ યાદ છે. અહીં અમે સૌ મજામાં છીએ. મારી તબીયત એકદમ સારી છે. તારી તબીયત ત્યાં કેમ રહે છે એ લખજે.

અહીંના પત્રો તો તને પેપર દ્વારા મળતા જ હશે ને છતાં થોડુંક લખું છું. આ વર્ષે દર વરસ કરતાં ખૂબ જ પુર આવેલો છે જેથી હીંદુસ્તાનને ખૂબ જ નુકશાન થયું છે. આર્થિક રીતે તથા જાનમાલથી. દીલ્હીમાં એશિયામાં સૌથી મોટામાં મોટું ઓદ્યોગીક પ્રદર્શન ચાર દિવસ પહેલાં જવાહરલાલને હાથે ખુલ્લું મુકાયું. જમુનામાં પુર એટલું બધું આવેલ કે આ પ્રદર્શનના મેદાનમાં પણ પાણી ભરાય ગયેલા. આજકાલ જવાહરલાલ સૌરાષ્ટ્રની ટુર ઉપર છે. સૌરાષ્ટ્ર તરફથી ૪૦ બળદ જોડી તથા ૧ બગીયા ની જવાહરલાલને ભેટ અપાશે હમણાં પુનરચના અંગે પિંચવાહો ઉભા થયા છે વિચારણા તથા વાટાઘાટો ચાલે છે જોઈએ શું પરિણામ આવે છે.

હવે તો નાતાલની થોડી થોડી તૈયારી થતી હશે તમારી કેટલા

પ્રિય ભાઈ હેમેન્દ્ર,

તારા પહેલાં બંને પત્રો વાંચવા મળેલા. એ પછીના હવે મળશે. તારા ત્યાં પહોંચ્યા પછી તને તુરત જ પત્ર લખવો જોઈતો હતો. પરંતુ તેમજ બની શક્યું. એનો ખૂબ અફસોસ થાય છે. જીવનની ઘટમાળ કેવી છે! એક પત્ર લખવો હોય તો એ પણ નથી બની શકતું. એમાં દોષ પોતાનો જ હોય છે. દિવસભર ટુંક કામ કર્યા કરતા કે એટલી પણ ફુરસદ ન મળે, એટલી મનની નબળાઈ. જીવવું શું! અફસોસ કરવાથી એ પતી નથી જતું. તારી તબીયત સારી હશે. અને રોજગાર જોઈએ! કામની વહેંચણી કેમ કરી છે. કોલેજનો શું સમય છે! અમને અકેક કાગળ ફુરસદ મેળવીને વિગતવાર લખજે. શૈલેષ તો તને અને અમેરિકાને ખૂબ જ યાદ કરે છે. એને પણ આવવું છે. જેટલા પ્લેન - તું ગયો એ દરમ્યાન - ઉડતા જોયે એટલે સાદ પાડે કે બટુકમામા જાય છે. પછી એમ કહે કે બટુકમામાએ સાંભળ્યું નહિ. હવે સુખે બેસાડ્યો છે. થોડું થોડું આવડ્યું છે. હમણાં તો અમે દિવાળીની તૈયારીમાં પડ્યા છીએ. તમને દિવાળી યાદ આવે છે? રસોઈની કેમ વ્યવસ્થા કરી છે? તને કાંઈ ફાવે છે? પેલા દુધાળાની ત્યાં ગયા બાદ ફસાયા છો કે નહિ? અને પરચુરણ તે માટે શું કર્યું? વડીયાથી પત્ર આવતો હશે!

અહિં બધાની તબીયત સારી છે. બાપુજીની આંખે હજુ એમજ છે. અનુતાઈને અહિં કામ માટે બોલાવેલ પરંતુ બાપુજીની આંખને અંગે બાપુજી એના લખાવે છે જે આવ્યા હોત તો એમને માટે સારું હતું. ત્યાં હજુ એમને માટે કાંઈ પણ વ્યવસ્થા થઈ નથી. આરે તરફથી ચિંતા છે. તું તારું ભાવિ સુધારવા ઈચ્છા છે. બા બાપુજીની વૃધ્ધાવસ્થાનો પ્રશ્ન મુંઝવે છે. ચિંતા વગરનું જીવન કોનું હશે? મોટાભાઈ ફરજ ચૂક્યા છે. જીવન જીવવું સહેલું છે સહન કરવું અઘરું છે.

વજન વધ્યું હોય તો લખજે. હવે આવતા નૂતન વર્ષના અભિનંદન મોકલશું. તારા બનેવી આનંદમાં છે. તારા મિત્ર - તેં લખેલ જેને વિષે એનો પ્રત્યુત્તર ન્હોતો મળ્યો. શું થયું હશે એ કદાચ તને ખબર હોય. તારાચંદ ભાઈ તને જ્યારે આયખે છે ત્યારે યાદ કરે છે, કાગળ લખજે. અંકેસ્ની બેનના સ્મરણ. તારા મિત્રોને પણ સ્મરણ કહેજે. કાંઈ પણ વસ્તુ મગાવવી હોય તો લખજે.

Dear Brother Hemen,

Your both letters reached here after circulating around. For a very long time, I have been thinking of writing a letter to you, but so far haven't been able to write, which causes me grief.

Only those who have experienced it can truly understand how much joy the letters from loved ones bring to family members gone far away, but others can certainly imagine a bit from those experiences. You must have settled in properly over there by now, and your health must also be remaining good. Reading the descriptions of your journey and arrival there, it felt as if watching it with our own eyes. From time to time, do write to us about that country's regions, people, customs, and traditions. Though nowadays, science and technology are advancing so much in the world that even if we spend our lives in a small mud house in a village, if we wish to stay informed about events happening every moment across the world, facilities have been created to allow that; and within a few more years, daily news and occurrences that are heard will also be visible, after which the lack of having been nowhere or seen nothing that every person feels will no longer remain.

How is your household/living running? Shri Hasmukhlal is also preparing to come there — there meaning in your city or somewhere else? When he comes there, everyone will have good company.

Your latest letter hasn't been received yet. It will arrive in a day or two after circulating around, let's see. Jyoti wrote in the previous letter regarding your sweater, and today there is a letter regarding sending it. Once your letter is received, I will get a detailed idea.

Since time will be somewhat limited until Diwali right now, I might be able to send it with Hasmukhlal himself; but if you have an urgent need and I should try to send it immediately, then do inform at once.

Good news is coming from Vadia. Respected Bapuji's condition remains the same as before. It is uncertain when fans will be installed in every house. As far as I remember, everyone else is fine. Here all of us are doing well. My health is completely good. Do write how your health is remaining over there.

You must be getting news from here through the papers anyway, yet I am writing a little. This year, compared to every year, there have been massive floods, which have caused huge losses to India financially as well as in terms of life and property. In Delhi, Asia's largest industrial exhibition was inaugurated four days ago by Jawaharlal [Nehru]. The Jamuna river flooded so much that water filled up the grounds of this exhibition as well. These days Jawaharlal is on a tour of Saurashtra. A gift of 40 pairs of bullocks and 1 buggy will be presented to Jawaharlal from Saurashtra's side. Recently, complications/hurdles have arisen regarding the reorganisation, discussions and negotiations are ongoing; let's see what result comes out.

Now preparations for Christmas must be starting little by little... how many of your...

Dear Brother Hemendra,

Got to read both of your first letters. The ones after that will be received now. Immediately after your arrival there, a letter should have been written to you. But it couldn't happen that way, which causes deep regret. How the wheel of life is! Even if one wants to write a single letter, it doesn't happen. The fault in that is one's own. Doing small work all day long or not getting even that much leisure time — such weakness of the mind! What a life to live! Expressing regret doesn't finish it off. Hope your health is good. And what about employment/job? How have you divided the work? What are the college timings? Write to us in detail whenever you find leisure time, letter by letter.

Sailesh remembers you and America very much. He also wants to come. During the time you left, whenever he sees planes flying, he shouts out that Batukmama is going. Then he says that Batukmama didn't hear. Now he is seated comfortably. He has learned a little bit. Right now we are engaged in preparations for Diwali. Do you remember Diwali? How have you arranged for cooking? Does anything suit you? After going there, have you gotten stuck with that milkman/dairy setup or not? And what did you do for miscellaneous things? Letters must be coming from Vadia!

Everyone's health is good here. Bapuji's eyes are still the same. Anutai was called here for work, but regarding Bapuji's eyes, Bapuji makes her write; had she come, it would have been good for her. No arrangement has been made for her over there yet. There is anxiety from that side. You wish to improve your future. The question of Ba and Bapuji's old age causes worry. Whose life is without worry? Elder Brother has shirked his duty. Living life is easy, enduring it is difficult.

If your weight has increased, do write. Now we will send greetings for the upcoming New Year. Your brother-in-law is in good spirits. Your friend — the one you wrote about — no reply was received from him. What could have happened, perhaps you might know. Tarachandbhai remembers you whenever he looks this way. Do write a letter.
