Hemendra,
This is to write that I received your deeply emotional and affectionate letter, as well as a couple of postcards. However, out of my own negligence, I did not reply to a single letter of yours, thereby hurting your feelings and plunging you into a whirlpool of troubling thoughts. In this latest letter, you wrote that I misunderstood your letter and felt bad, which is why I was not writing back to you—but there is nothing like that in my heart. The love I had for you earlier is even greater today, and I feel it continues to grow day by day. But residing far away from me, how could you possibly understand that? I did not feel bad about you in the slightest, and even if something were to happen in the future, I would never take it to heart.
It has been 11 months since I wrote a letter to you, which might have raised a slight doubt in your mind regarding me, but it was purely due to laziness and unnecessary, chaotic busywork that I could not write. Whenever I felt like writing a letter to you, the thought occurred that I would write a detailed, "long" letter to you at leisure, but my wish never materialized. The reason was that almost every morning from 8 to 11, my uncle would be at home, and I did not like writing letters in his presence. Today, since I have a holiday and uncle has gone to the market, I have sat down at ease to write this letter to you. This time, I have to take the Junior exam on October 20th. To tell you the truth, I haven't been able to study anything, and there is a constant fear of the exam, with thoughts of it continually hovering in my mind. In all these years of my life, I have failed for the very first time, so it has hurt me deeply. I had never
worked as hard in any other year as the strenuous effort I put in this time. For the past month, I was studying nearly ten to eleven hours a day, yet when I heard that I had failed, at first I couldn't even believe it. Afterwards, I was truly astonished at how the result turned out completely opposite to what was expected. In the end, there is nothing left to say to convince oneself except that we performed the hard work within our power and left the result to God; whatever His will was, happened. This is my story, reading which you will feel in your mind how unfortunate I am.
None of the friends here meet either; who knows where everyone has vanished? Mankodi met me and my uncle three or four days ago. He talked with my uncle,
while I just stood by his side. I have heard that Rajendra, Ranchhod, and Mahendra have gotten engaged. I have given up hope of receiving wedding invitation cards from them. Madhukant has also gotten engaged. Now, when will I receive good news from your side?
Learned from your letter that Anubhai had an argument over a petty matter with elder brother and has left for Kolkata, and currently things aren't going well regarding relationships in your family. As far as I assume, there probably isn't a single joint family in Gujarat or Kathiawar where family disputes don't arise on account of the sisters-in-law (derani-jethani). As the saying goes among us, "Where there is a village, there will be a dunghill." But according to my view, it must be more of Anubhai's fault. He shouldn't have been misled
simply by listening to everything his wife said. I don't know the full facts, so I won't say anything further. In my mind, until now, I believed that your family possessed great unity and affection just like ours, and that your office was also running well. Two or three years ago, when you came to meet me in Surendranagar, you mentioned that your office was running very well and that the profit on the sale of a single tractor was also quite good. But only when I read your last letter did I realize that the reality is not quite like that. Hearing this news truly fills me with both surprise and sorrow—how could such a huge change happen in two years? But as I told you earlier, no one's will prevails before God. Man should always perform his effort with a true heart and a smiling face, and leave the outcome to
the Lord. You must have lightened your mind by sharing all these matters with me? But how much can the mind be lightened through a letter? The joy and happiness of meeting that arise when we meet face-to-face and talk—how can that be obtained through a letter? Do make it a point to come here during this Diwali vacation; after staying here for a week or ten days, if you wish to go to Rajkot or Vadia, you may go. This is my heartfelt invitation to you, which I hope you will certainly accept.
Our relationship is 9–10 years old, and I am certain that I have never made a mistake in understanding you. I can understand you and your emotions very well,
and I assure you that you too should expect the same feelings from my side, and on the day I make a mistake, do correct me without fail. We both know each other well, and the unique bond that currently exists between us will surely remain forever.
Before sitting down to write the letter, many thoughts came to mind every day, and when I sat down to write this letter, all of them launched a simultaneous assault, so much so that now I don't understand what to write next! So for now, saying this much, I conclude.
I have read your last letter four or five times, but I still
feel like reading it again and again. Written with great enthusiasm and a slight touch of anger, I liked this letter very much. If I always expect such "long" letters from your side, you wouldn't consider it unreasonable, would you?
That is all for now.
Forever yours,
Naresh
