તારા ૧૬-૧૭ જાન્યુઆરીના પત્રનો ઉત્તર આજે બરાબર એક મહિનો અને ત્રણ દિવસે આપવા બેસું છું. તે જાણીને મને પણ મારા પર દયા આવે છે તો તને તો સ્વાભાવિક જ આશ્ચર્ય થશે જ. આ પહેલાંનો પત્ર પણ તને આશ્ચર્ય સાથે જ મળ્યો હતો. કેમ ખરું ને? હા એ સત્ય હકીકત છે કે શાંતિ-સદનમાં રહેતાં નરેશને પત્ર Post કરવા માટે ૨ આના આઠ પૈસા તાંઝાનિા ખીસામાં ન હતાં. અને મને ખ્યાલ પણ ન હતો કે સરકારે જુના કવરો બંધ કર્યા છે. મને તો કોઈકે કહેલું કે માર્ચ મહિનાથી જુના કવરોનું ચલણ બંધ થવાનું છે એટલે આવા કપરા સંજોગોમાં એ કવર ઠીક કામ લાગશે તેમ માનીને જ મેં પત્ર લખ્યો હતો.

અત્યારે જ કાકાને તથા મારા મામાને પત્ર લખ્યો છે એટલે હાથ એકદમ થાકી ગયા છે. અક્ષરો પણ ખરાબ નિકળ્યા છે. તો માફ કરજે.

હવે તો હું આપણા Plans ક્યારે Practical માં આવે તેની જ રાહ જોઈને બેઠો છું. એકાદ મિત્રને તો કોઈ Paying ધંધો પણ ગોતવા કહ્યું છે. થોડા Investment પર સારો કરતાં પણ ચૉક્કસ નફો રહે તેવો ધંધો ગોતવા મંડ્યું છે. તારા ખ્યાલમાં છે તેવું કંઈ? તો જરૂર જણાવજે કે જેથી આપણા Plans જલ્દીથી

પજ્ઞાના પ્રકરણ વિષે નહિવત જાનમી જાણી. વધુ તો હવે પાછા આપણે મળશું ત્યારે જ ને? ક્યારે મળશું? ક્યાં મળશું? હું વાડિયા આવું તેમ તારું લખવું છે પણ તે બાબત મેં વિચાર કર્યો નથી.

જ્યોતિ કે જે હજુ મારી યાદમાં તો નાની ૧ 1/2 - ૨ વરસની નિર્દોષ બાળક જેવી છે તે અહીં આવી ગઈ પણ તે મને જણાવ્યું નહિ. હું જોઉં તો તેને જોઈને ઓળખી તો ન શકેત પણ કદાચ સાચું પણ ન માની શકેત. કારણ કે હવે તો ખૂબ મોટી થઈ ગઈ હશે. વિરેન્દ્રના પત્રો આવતા હશે. તે મઝામાં હશે.

હાલ રોજ કાકાના પત્રો આવતા હશે. આજે જ એમનો મારા પર તેમનો એક પત્ર આવ્યો છે. કંઈ ખાસ નવીન લખતા નથી.

મધુકાંતની કંકોત્રી તારા પર આવી જ હશે. કારણ મેં તેને તારું તથા જગદીશકાકાનું એડ્રેસ આપ્યું હતું. જગદીશકાકાને કંકોત્રી

મળી ગઈ છે. તને મળી કે નહિ? રણછોડે પણ તારીખ ૨-૨-૫૫ ના દિવસે પ્રભુતામાં પગલાં માંડ્યા છે. જો કે મને તો તે સાવ ભૂલી ગયો લાગે છે. કદાચ રસ્તા પર મળે તો પણ ઓળખી ન શકે! તેની કંકોત્રી તારા પર હતી? ક્યાંથી હોય જ્યારે મારા પર પણ નથી ને. ખેર કંઈ નહિ, ખૂબ અફસોસ કરવા જેવું કંઈ તેમાં નથી. આ રીતે આ મહિનામાં આપણા બે સ્કૂલ friend Duplicate થઈ ગયા. બીજા અડધા Duplicate થઈ ગયા છે. ઘણાં કાચા સાવ લુખ્ખા રહી ગયા છે.

Dear Hemendra,

I am extremely sorry for my last letter which caused you to pay a penalty of 3 As.

I am sitting down to reply to your letter dated 16-17 January today, exactly after one month and three days. Knowing this, I feel pity for myself, so it is only natural that you will be surprised. The letter before this was also received by you with surprise, isn't that true? Yes, it is a true fact that Naresh, residing at Shanti-Sadan, did not have 2 annas 8 pies in his pocket to post the letter. And I was not aware that the government had discontinued the old envelopes. Someone had told me that the circulation of old envelopes was going to stop from the month of March, so thinking that the envelope would be useful in such tough circumstances, I wrote the letter.

Just now I wrote letters to Kaka and to my uncle, so my hand is completely tired. The handwriting has also turned out poor, so please forgive me.

Now I am just waiting for when our Plans come into Practical reality. I have even asked a friend to look for some paying business. He has started looking for a business that requires little investment and yields a steady, if not large, definite profit. Do you have anything like that in mind? If so, do let me know so that our plans can be understood quickly.

Learned very little about Pragna's chapter. More about it only when we meet again, right? When will we meet? Where will we meet? You wrote asking me to come to Wadia, but I haven't thought about that matter.

Jyoti, who in my memory is still like an innocent 1 ½ - 2-year-old child, came here, but you didn't inform me. If I saw her, I wouldn't have recognized her, or perhaps I wouldn't have believed it to be true—because she must have grown up very big by now. Virendra's letters must be coming; he must be doing well.

Kaka's letters must be coming regularly these days. Just today, a letter from him arrived for me. He doesn't write anything particularly new.

Madhukant's wedding invitation card must have reached you, because I gave him your address as well as Jagdishkaka's. Jagdishkaka has received the invitation. Did you get it or not? Ranchhod also stepped into married life on 2-2-55. Though it seems he has completely forgotten me; even if we meet on the road, he might not recognize me! Was there an invitation card for you from him? How could there be when there wasn't one for me either. Well, never mind, there is nothing to regret too much about it. In this way, two of our school friends got 'duplicated' this month. Others have become half-'duplicated', and many raw ones have remained completely single.
