What is this if not the manifestation of “those rare qualities of heart”? The richness of heart is not so easy to part with, my friend !! As regards the heart, a change for the better may be pretty easy, and even overnight, but not one for the worse !

— અરે, તું તો impracticableને practicable બનાવી શકે એટલો તેજસ્વી અને શક્તિશાળી છો — and please don't take this all in good humour !

Dear Brother,

Your letter generously mending our long-interrupted correspondence was finally received a week ago. By not replying to it as quickly as you had requested, I must have made you quite angry—though the fact that I couldn't spot even a faint reflection of that anger in your second letter received this morning is proof of your noble nature and generous heart! What is this if not the manifestation of “those rare qualities of heart”? The richness of heart is not so easy to part with, my friend!! As regards the heart, a change for the better may be pretty easy, and even overnight, but not one for the worse!

So, coming to the main point now. Even though you hadn't received a reply to your letter until today, I am sure you wouldn't harbor any kind of line of misunderstanding about me or Jashubhai—we surely expect that level of closeness from you, don't we?! Indeed, without indulging in the formal formalities of an invitation, you yourself expressed the desire to come down to Ahmedabad on your own initiative, which we consider a convincing proof of your closeness.

Can you imagine how much satisfaction both of us felt upon seeing such a deep understanding of the hearts of your lazy and erratic-minded friends? Well, let me explain the reasons behind the delay in expressing that short burst of enthusiasm through a letter. Around the time your first letter arrived, Mahendrabhai stayed here for a day while on his way to Bhavnagar. Since I don't have mid-term examinations this time and Vidyaben's holidays also start about ten days early, knowing this, he tried hard to take me along with him. Tempted by the prospect of spending a few days with him, I melted too, and on the day he left, assuming everything was set, I even promised to reach Bhavnagar the next day... and as fate would have it, on that very day—

(2) Your letter arrived! After that, I began to experience dilemma, confusion, and indecision perhaps greater than what Rama felt at the time of exiling Sita! Four to six days passed in constantly deliberating whether to postpone going to Bhavnagar a bit and wait for you or not, keeping you in quite a bit of suspense—as I had to. Ultimately, your second "letter-missile" that arrived this morning tipped the scale, and I made the decision to wait for you!

In the present "situation," as per my calculation, the fact that I don't have 'mid-terms' is itself a major favorable point. Jashubhai has two days of theory exams starting on 6-10, while the Practicals are only around the 22nd–23rd. Thus, the circumstances are fully favorable for your arrival! Even if you set out on the morning of the 6th and arrive, there is no harm; however, if you set out and reach on the morning of the 10th instead of the 6th, you will be saved from seeing Jashubhai in his heavy exam mood! Otherwise, your presence will certainly prove to be inspiring. Friends and loved ones present during times of hardship prove to be valuable like gold, and exams of the kind of routine we have to pass through are indeed 'hardships' too, aren't they?! That's all; will you now drop a letter informing us of your final decision? You are free to decide on either the 6th or the 10th. If changing the date from the 6th to the 10th upsets your entire 'program,' then certainly don't do so. Until Jashubhai gets free from his exams, the two of us can wander around alone and finish the shopping and miscellaneous errands you need to do—we hope to see Jashubhai in a mood where his absence (and for us, almost indispensable!) remains for that duration! But make sure not to delay beyond the 10th—remember that our 'program' begins on the afternoon of the 10th, and ensuring that it doesn't get upset is your responsibility too!

Good movies are playing in the cinema. Jashubhai and friends have seen a few of them, but I have decided to wait until you arrive. Apart from this, a few other items have also been decided upon.

(3) I am writing all this so that you get some idea of what a heavy responsibility rests on your shoulders, and so that you don't even entertain the thought of leaving later than the morning of the 10th! When you arrive on the 10th, Jashubhai will probably have already left home to give his last two exam papers, so on that day, you won't need to look at Jashubhai's stressed face. It is necessary to note that it has been decided that by the time Jashubhai returns, we should have all settled in and watched the selected films!!

So now, can you write a letter by return post giving final approval to this entire 'program' and stating the exact date of your arrival and train? From your side, this is neither "impossible" nor "impracticable," right?! — Why, you are bright and capable enough to make the impracticable practicable — and please don't take this all in good humor!

Under the auspices of Gujarat University, presented by British artists of the International Shakespearean Theatrical Co., you will get a great opportunity to watch the latter two plays out of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice," "Macbeth & Twelfth Night," and "Othello." (Actually, there will be an opportunity to watch all, but the excitement will be for those two plays!!) I must be missing you a lot. You must have even read some of them, so you will be able to enjoy them even more in our company, my boy.

(4) That's all then, write a letter quickly and arrive. We will talk more in person!

Yours,

Mahendra

P.S.

(1) If you have extra luggage, we will make arrangements to store it in the "clock-room" at the station.

(2) Your 'program' here will be for at least two to three days; keep that in mind when writing a letter home or to friends so that you don't commit to something that forces you to make excuses later!

(3) Although Jashubhai is not writing a separate letter, know that this letter has been written according to his instructions. Since he is engrossed in reading, I did not insist further on him writing a letter — Yours.

From Mahendra Parekh

30 Shrimali Society, Ahmedabad-9

P.S. Thank you very much, got 2317 approved! — Now at night 76 is impracticable! Well, once the stock comes into hand, prove it. — Brother's regards
