10 August 55.
Parekhbhai,
Just received your letter. Exams are ongoing, so even amid the scarcity of time, I couldn't help but write a detailed letter to you.
The expense estimate given to you by making a phone call was sent from the University. Balance $1500. I sent the college schedule last Sunday.
In my previous letter: Champaign-Urbana is a twin city, a big city. Cities settled on two sides of a hundred roads. Get down at the corner of the U of I Drugstore at the city bus, city shopper's lorry, and Miss Campus (campus bus stand).
Arranged it so that you stay for four or five days in July, and if July turns out fine and must be given, then returning books won't be available and facing wind/wires won't happen.
Throw the University's 150 and other booklets into the sea. Everything is a farce. Bring only one Woolen suit (wool for the road) (just differently for London). If you bring heavy ones, after coming here you will have to sell them off. I threw mine away at new numbers in London; no one wears them here. Not even professors. That tie will also have to be thrown away. Bring one—in London all that is necessary. In short, what about the suit there? Single breast, one button, didn't say much... coat. Trousers not narrow. Sleeves are not far. It is as it is. If you have had them stitched, bring them along. All this will feel strange, but it is backed by a lot of experience and deep insight. White ones will also be available very cheap—plain ones will be available. Here I never wear a white shirt at all; only sports shirts, colored ones are worn. Shorts haven't been needed after coming here, but if you bring them to wear at home, it wouldn't be wrong. Bring about 1 dozen handkerchiefs; here you get 1 for a dollar. Socks and underwear also a dozen; for several friends, 5 is fine. But whether fine changes will be considered in that or not. Bringing only what is not available here is the important thing. You will have to carry five days' worth of necessary items on the way. Don't bring Khadi ones, but bring large-sized ones. It is not cold in London right now. Here, original heat is raging. Do not bring a new compass box. (Not needed for Mech. Eng., but for me...)
So, things will have to be managed fairly well. Just this: if you bring 1 set of needles/thread, it wouldn't be wrong. It will be good to show friends. Let me know as soon as your booking is done. If you have any other questions, write immediately.
Regards to all,
Greetings from Jayantilal
